The threatening blues of rainy Sundays in Portland must be combated somehow...and some warm, comfort food usually does the trick for us. Whether it's homemade or a local culinary offering, we haven't failed to satisfy that craving for a hearty Sunday meal lately...the most recent one included, as we trekked downtown to legendary sandwich joint
Bunk.
 |
| This tiny spot beckoned us in from the rain |
 |
| Leave your umbrella, get ready to chow |
Almost literally a hole in the wall, this place has made quite a name for itself in this town and has been deemed by many to produce the best sandwiches in Portland. This place has been on my list since before we moved here, so I'd say it was about time we gave it a shot. And a few hungry bites.
A simple chalkboard wall menu awaited us inside, and it didn't take long to decide what we wanted...though, the brussels sprout sandwich has seriously piqued my curiousity. Next time.

| So many delicious choices, so little space to sit inside.... |
We put an order in for a Roast Beef and a Pulled Pork. Can't go wrong with that. Then we squeezed into the only available seats (of the 10ish there) in the back at the bar, overlooking the tiny kitchen space where our grub was being prepared. Smoky meatiness filled the air.
Just before our drool hit the counter, we were tossed a paper bag full of kettle chips and warm melty hearty sandwich goodness. Let's do this.
 |
| On their signature kaiser roll, a huge pile of pulled pork awaited me, covered in cabbage apple slaw, grainy mustard, and pickles |
 |
| A few bites in, about dead and gone to hog heaven |
 |
| Oh yeah, Davis was there too. And he got an insanely moist and delicious roast beef sammy smothered in horseradish, cheddar, dijon and carmelized onions...and would only surrender one bite of it to his wife |
We got lost in sandwich bliss for a few moments before we called those suckers devoured and rolled on out of there. I want to go back and try every other sandwich on the menu. Who's with me? Bunk, for the win. Another reason why my tastebuds call this town home.
xo
and have a great week
You're killin' me...and that's no bunk :D
